Gurban Yetirmishli, Director General of the Republican Seismic Survey Center (RSSC) of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences - Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences and Professor - is visiting Uzbekistan to participate in working meetings organized by the G.A.Mavlonov Institute of Seismology of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan in Tashkent from September 8 to 12, 2026.
The visit aims to discuss promising areas of scientific cooperation arising from the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Institute of Seismology of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Republican Seismic Survey Center of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. Key objectives include holding joint discussions on seismology, seismic monitoring, and seismogenic processes; exchanging experience; and further expanding bilateral cooperation in the field of earthquake forecasting.
As part of his visit, on September 9, Professor Gurban Yetirmishli—Director General of the RSSC ANAS and a Corresponding Member of ANAS—met with Professor Vakhitkhan Ismailov, Director of the G.A.Mavlonov Institute of Seismology of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan and a Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences.
At the meeting, it was noted that the Republic of Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan are fraternal nations and allies, and that extensive cooperation exists between the seismological centers of both countries. It was highlighted that significant steps are being taken to further expand bilateral cooperation between the relevant institutions of both countries, as well as between their seismological centers.
The parties, noting the high level of current relations between the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Republic of Azerbaijan, emphasized the fraternal bond between the Azerbaijani and Uzbek peoples. It was noted that collaborative efforts between seismologists from Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan are ongoing, both on a bilateral basis and within the framework of international seismological organizations.
It is worth noting that young scientists and specialists from the Republican Seismic Survey Center (RSSC) of ANAS participated in the Summer School for Young Seismologists—organized by the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan in Tashkent, the capital of the Republic of Uzbekistan—from August 24 to 28, 2026, and delivered presentations. The meeting highlighted the importance of such events for fostering the mutual exchange of experience among young seismologists. Additionally, another group of RSSC staff members is scheduled to visit Uzbekistan in the near future to exchange expertise with seismologists from the fraternal country. An agreement was reached at the meeting regarding the conduct of joint scientific research, information exchange, and participation in international projects.
The meeting concluded with the presentation of commemorative gifts and a group photo.
