An opening ceremony for the Republican scientific conference titled “The Study of Common Monuments in the Literary and Cultural Relations of the Peoples of the Near and Middle East” was held at Baku State University, dedicated to the 85th anniversary of prominent orientalist and associate professor Asmetkhanym Mamedova.
Addressing the event, BSU Rector Elchin Babayev described Asmetkhanym Mamedova’s life, academic achievements, pedagogical work, and socio-political activities as exemplary. He noted that she entered BSU 66 years ago and has remained closely connected to the university ever since.
The rector emphasized that the study of the works of Nizami Ganjavi has been a central focus of Mamedova’s scholarly activity. He also highlighted her active role in public and political life as a member of the Milli Majlis during its first and second convocations from 1995 to 2005.
Elchin Babayev presented Associate Professor Asmetkhanym Mamedova with an honorary diploma on the occasion of her 85th anniversary in recognition of her fruitful scientific and pedagogical activity, her contribution to educating young people in the spirit of patriotism, and her active participation in the university’s public life.
During the ceremony, a documentary video dedicated to the scholar’s life and work was screened. Rector of Ankara University Necdat Ünyuvar also delivered a video message congratulating the honoree.
Chairman of the Science and Education Committee of the Ministry of Culture and BSU department head Anar Iskandarov stated that Asmetkhanym Mamedova is among the intellectuals who have left a deep mark on Azerbaijan’s scientific and public life. He noted that throughout her career she has worked consistently to preserve and pass on the country’s socio-cultural heritage to future generations.
Dean of the Faculty of Oriental Studies Aydan Khandan delivered a report on Mamedova’s academic and teaching activities. She noted that Asmetkhanym Mamedova was admitted to the Persian Language Department of BSU’s Faculty of Oriental Studies in 1960 and graduated with honors in 1965. She later pursued postgraduate studies at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and completed an internship at Leningrad State University between 1967 and 1968.
Since 1969, Mamedova has worked as an associate professor at BSU’s Faculty of Oriental Studies. In 1972, she defended her PhD dissertation. Over the course of her career, she has published around 200 academic articles both in Azerbaijan and abroad. Her 2007 research work, “Accent in the Persian Language,” was noted for its important scholarly conclusions and experimental findings valuable for both Persian studies and linguistics in general. She has also translated more than 10 books from Persian into Azerbaijani.
For her contributions to science and education, Asmetkhanym Mamedova has received numerous honors, including the “Advanced Education Worker” badge, the 3rd-degree “Emek” Order, the “100th Anniversary of Baku State University (1919–2019)” jubilee medal, and the “Golden Pen” diploma awarded by the Azerbaijan Writers' Union.
The event also featured speeches by Deputy Chairman of the Milli Majlis Rafael Huseynov, MP Zhala Aliyeva, corresponding member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences Konul Bunyadzade, Head of Department at the State Border Service Academy Ilhama Mammadova, First Secretary of the National Commission of Azerbaijan for UNESCO Shahin Shabanov, as well as members of parliament Sayyad Aran and Aydin Mirzazade.
In her concluding remarks, Asmetkhanym Mamedova expressed gratitude for the recognition of her work, stating that she has always seen the meaning of her life in serving Azerbaijan, science, education, and students.
